CozumelThe Island of Cozumel, Quintana Roo, began its economic recovery on Wednesday with the arrival of the cruise ship "Enchantment of the Seas" with 2,466 passengers aboard, after the health contingency reported in Mexico.

The cruise ship, owned by Royal Caribbean International, was received by Federal Government Tourism Secretary, Rodolfo Elizondo Torres; Government of the State of Quintana Roo, Félix González Canto; Mayor of Cozumel, Juan Carlos González; Director General of the Mexican Tourist Board (CPTM), Óscar Fitch Gómez and State Tourism Secretary Sara Latife Ruiz Chávez, among other government officials from the three levels of government.

“Freedom of the Seas,” with 3,300 passengers, is scheduled to arrive on the island on Friday, followed by “Holiday” on Saturday with 1,452, a clear sign of the reactivation of the country's cruise ship industry and the economic activity of Cozumel, regarded as the world's main cruise ship receiver.

After a month without arrivals, as a result of the health contingency in Mexico, the Tourism Secretary said that this is a clear sign of the resort's recovery, with the three cruise ships expected to provide earnings of $580,000 USD.

“The resumption of activities in this port is a clear sign of the recovery of tourism in Cozumel and throughout the country which will enable us to show visitors, as President Felipe Calderón said, that Mexico is not only a beautiful country but a strong one capable to enduring the greatest adversity, in addition to the fact that Mexicans always welcome visitors," said Elizondo Torres.

Cozumel He added that over the next 30 days, a total of 39 cruise ships are expected to arrive at Mexican ports, with Cozumel receiving the majority (26).

The arrival of “Freedom of the Seas,” the world’s largest passenger ship in this Quintana Roo port, coincides with the launching of the “Vive México” movement, an initiative developed by Federal Government to promote and encourage the country's tourist sector.

Director General of Mexico’s Tourist Board Óscar Fitch Gómez said that the arrival of “Enchantment of the Seas,” “Freedom of the Seas” and “Holiday” is not only a sign of the reactivation of the sector but also of the confidence of tourists and world-class firms such as Royal Caribbean International and Carnival, in the potential of the national tourist industry, its first-rate services and Mexican hospitality to international visitors.

Cozumel Island, internationally renowned for its tourist infrastructure, wharves and diving sites, is one of the first five cities certified by the Health Secretariat as "free of the Influenza A H1N1 virus," as a result of which activities at this resort are expected to return to normal by June 15th at the latest.
