Puerto Vallarta will live the Month of our Fatherland and Tourism
With a wide program of cultural, civic, sports, academic and gastronomic activities, the, second edition of the “Vive Puerto Vallarta” Festival, September, month of the Fatherland and Tourism was presented, it is considered a plus to the great touristic offer that Puerto Vallarta features.
This edition will include some innovation in the activities as, in addition to the popular fatherland festivities, sports events will add an attractive touch, aiming at strengthening the tourism market represented by it. The activities will be carried out throughout the month of September, hosting among other events, a National Professional Tennis Tournament, September 2 to 6, attending the presence of some Davis Cup representatives. There will also be a series of conferences called “Sports and Applied Sciences”, with the presence of personalities such as Jerzy Hausleber, ex-national coach, Raúl Barreda, Olympic trainer in Beijing 2008, Daniel Bautista, Olympic champion in Montreal ’76, Sandra Tavares, olympic ex-athlete among other important personalities.
Vallartenses and visitors will be able to watch the foot-race ‘Viejo Vallarta 10 km’ in the traditional part of the city, with its different categories, as well as the first Puerto Vallarta 2008 Karate Do Cup, to take place on September 21st; the Artistic Gymnastics Competition on the 27th; as well as the First National Municipal Sports Meeting of CONADE (National Sports Commission).
The International Beach Volley Ball tournament will be held from September 26 to 28, eyeing the Pan-American Games 2010 and wishing to strengthen the port’s candidacy to host this discipline. There will also be open water swimming on 2.5km and 5km distances as well as a triathlon, also aiming at the Pan-American Games 2010. All of these tasks will be transmitted live through the TVC Deportes y ESPN networks.
To enhance Mexican folklore, every Friday will offer Mariachi concerts at the various plazas of each municipality, all of this adding to the great September 15 party, the crowning of the Queen of the Fatherland Festivities, as well as the parades of September 16 and the one on September 14, headed by the Vallartense charros .
On the cultural side, there will be a display of the Works of Pedro Tello, awarded the Vallarta Prize 2008, conferences on mexicanhood and works from the Sixth International Congress on Tourism at the Centro Universitario de la Costa (CUC Coastal University Campus in Ixtapa, Jalisco, ten minutes from Puerto Vallarta airport). In addition to this a Rock concert is in the Works featuring groups Salón Victoria, Jumbo and División Minúscula.
Vallartense cuisine will have a special place through the Expo Gastronomy, to be held at the sculptor new section of the malecón (new south section of the boardwalk by the water, downtown), and framing these festivities, a well-deserved homage will be rendered to sculptor Alejandro Colunga, a Jalisco distinguished artist and a great promoter of this city, who has given life to the malecón zone with his works, this event will take place on September 20.
“It is an interesting offer, it will be a plus for those who want to visit Puerto Vallarta during that month, though it will also be a reason for recreation, entertainment, formative and informative options for Vallartenses” City Mayor Javier Bravo emphasized.

Works of Manuel Lepe to Promote Puerto Vallarta in 50 Countries
City mayor Javier Bravo Carbajal, announced that one of the works of painter Manuel Lepe has been chosen by Unicef to represent Mexico and Puerto Vallarta in the important labor it maintains in favor of the children of the world.
The above was made known through a City Hall press conference, also attended by Marcela Lepe, the daughter of this renowned Vallartense artist, and Wally Lobatto, head of the Art and Culture Sub-Direction.
The works of Manuel Lepe are known in a great number of countries, they reflect the innocence and candor of childhood as well as the beauty of the great Paradise he saw in this port, now to be the emblem of the noble cause driven by Unicef’s programs.
Lepe’s paintings – the city mayor explained – will be part of a collection of cards of this international organism, present in 50 countries, it will also represent the promotion of our destination on an international scale and the strengthening of our flow of tourism.
The sales generated by this card in Mexico are assigned to Unicef backed programs in favor of the children of our country.
Bravo Carbajal also pointed out that next year an intense campaign will be launched spreading the knowledge on the works of the artist, an artist that belongs to all Vallartenses and strengthens the city’s identity.
For her part Marcela Lepe [the painter’s daughter], announced that this image will be shown to all the world during the next two years. She also recognized the support of the city mayor undertaking the project of Manuel Lepe’s Home-Museum.
The cards-package will be available from the month of September in some supermarkets, department stores and airports; they can also be ordered at phone 01 800 786 4233, at a cost of 90 pesos; the resources obtained will be given to programs in support of Mexican children.

Puerto Vallarta Advances towards Environmental Certification
With significant advances towards the environmental certification of Puerto Vallarta, the preliminary results of the recent audit of the different areas and processes of the municipality were presented.
In consequence of the diagnose presented by the director of the company Energía, Mejora Continua y Capacitación (EMC2), in charge of these works, the city mayor pointed out that the results shown underline the great commitment existing “for the protection, care and preservation of the environment”, environmental regulation being applied to almost its entirety.
This audit allows also the knowledge of strengths and opportunities of improvement of Puerto Vallarta, and with them, to become an example for the rest of the country.
The Vallartense city mayor indicated that our municipality has a regulatory environmental management in accordance with the rights and responsibilities of each area, he therefore invited all those present to continue working towards this certification as a “Clean touristic Destination” to make Puerto Vallarta become the first municipality of Jalisco to achieve such distinction and will transcend this administration as “a legacy for our children and the pride of all”.

City Reforestation Campaign Launched
With the initial planting of 1,600 trees of different varieties, the Sub-Direction for the Environment and Ecology, in coordination with the Department of Parks and Gardens of the municipality, launched the reforestation works for Puerto Vallarta, these actions will contribute to make it a better Destination.
These tasks were held on the banks of the Pitillal River, where over one thousand trees were planted, there were almond trees, rosamorada (tabebuia rosea) trees, and Primavera (Spring tree) trees, although there is also a reforestation plan in coordination with the Comisión Nacional de Áreas Naturales Protegidas (CONANP National Commission for Natural Protected Areas), in the town of Tebelchía.
In the activities carried out in the banks of the Pitillal River, Non-Governmental Organizations and personnel of the Eighth Navy Base and the 41st Military Zone participated.
Juan Pablo García Castillón, director of Municipal Public Services, made a call to the citizenry with land with the adequate conditions for planting trees, as well as those who want to participate in the works of reforestation, to call phones: 225-9659 and 225-9658 extensions 108 and 113, in order to coordinate and unite to these actions in the benefit of all in Puerto Vallarta.

Efforts Doubled towards Beaches Certification
With the commitment to continue working on cleaning and certifying the beaches of this Destination and the municipalities integrating the Interstate Jalisco-Nayarit Clean Beaches Committee, the president of this committee took oath.
This Vallartense municipality as well as in the Nayarita municipality are working intensely in permanent activities that allow them to maintain the bay’s beaches as clean as possible.
Last year 8.5 million pesos from Zofemat (Federal Maritime Zone) funds were invested, in the purchase of trucks, machinery, vehicles, four-wheel, all terrain bikes and equipment to reinforce the cleaning labor of the port’s beaches, besides another 3.4 million fitting the body of life-savers and firemen, considering that safety is also an important part of the beaches certification process.
The Vallartense city mayor, pointed out that he will seek to have at least one certified beach per municipality before the next National Clean Beaches Meeting.
During the event spaces were open to present a young brigade from the neighboring municipality of Bahía de Banderas who were voluntarily integrated to the beach cleaning works, they also recognized the efforts and support of the outgoing president of Bahía de Banderas, Jaime Cuevas Tello.

Life-Savers Certified in Aquatic Rescue
A total of 27 life-savers of Puerto Vallarta were certified as “Ocean Life-Savers” by the Asociación Mexicana de Salvavidas A.C. (Mexican Association of Life-Savers), who performed said certification with the goal of forming highly capable elements to safeguard lives at this destination’s beaches.
The certificates endorsing the life-savers team were delivered at the firemen’s headquarters, and during the closing event, the Firemen’s chief congratulated all present for the effort shown during the 30 hours that the intense week-long course lasted acquiring new techniques they will use to safeguard the integrity of visitors and citizenry who use the municipality’s beaches.
Likewise, the head of the police authority pointed out that it is indispensable for this touristic destination to have the trained personnel to maintain order on the beaches, as well as prepared in all aspects of rescue to care and protect all those visiting the main attractions of our city.
At the end, Víctor Zavala, president of the Mexican Association of Life-Savers, confirmed his support to Puerto Vallarta with continued training courses to the Fire Department staff and specially to the life-savers body.
During the afternoon the body of life-savers performed a rehearsal on Conchas Chinas beach with the purpose of putting in practice the rescue knowledge acquired during their training.

Spaces for Youth Expression created
In its drive to boost different activities for the young, the City Hall, through the Instituto Vallartense de la Juventud (Vallarta Youth Institute), held the first event called “Vallarta Urbano” (Urban Vallarta), in the Grafitti category, in order to rescue the urban culture existing in this city, mainly among this sector of the population, creating spaces for their expression.
Luis Conrado Arias Rivera, the Institute’s Coordinator, indicated they will continue to work favoring this sector of the population as well as searching for larger spaces to continue promoting this type of events among the Vallartense community.
He also stated that this contest contributes to create a space where young people can express themselves freely and with respect to their way of thinking; therefore avoiding the painting of walls in forbidden areas.
During the event, the seven Grafitti finalists completed a painting within a limited timeframe and were rated by a jury of people experienced in that culture, taking into consideration the strokes, materials, space and creativity. The first place was awarded to Mel and Fost, while the second place went to Diesel and the third to Ser.
Likewise, talented individuals on Hip Hop, breakdance and other cultural expressions also participated as part of this event’s entertainment during the competition.
