FROM THE NORTH SHORE

San Francisco, Nayarit, Mexico
San Pancho - October 2006

By: Elvia & Geno Lamphiear

Mother Nature has once again been showing off her raw beauty in the form of wonderful rains along with incredibly powerful lightening and thunder shows!! She has even been throwing a little wind action our way now and then just for good measure. It looks as if we were the only ones in the area that experienced any type of wind damage with two of our almond trees in our yard being blown over one night!  During these storms, we like to turn out all the lights and cuddle on the couch to drink in these awesome performances.

The storms also make for “Surfers Heaven” here in San Pancho! The rains feed our now flowing river which empties into the estuary. The estuary fills and breaks through our sandy beach to the ocean and the river then flows through the estuary into the ocean creating a short-lived sandbar out from the beach into the ocean. The waves break further out creating exciting, long-rideable waves!  Surfs up dudes & dudettes!!

The following is a letter of importance from Judith Anderson and Betty McIntyre that we wished to share with our readers:

“Dear Friends,

We wanted to let you know that we are planning to have our spay/neuter clinic for San Pancho again on the 28th, 29th, and 30th of October 2006.  This year, we will hold the clinic in the Case de La Tercera Edad on the park, convenient to all in the pueblo and with enough days to spay/neuter 100 animals, if possible.  A group of doctors from Mexico City will be doing the operations, which are free to all participants.

While the operations will be free to the public, we do have to pay transportation for the doctors and medical supplies . . . but those are held to a minimum, and we are able to spay/neuter each animal for $13 USD. For those of you who have paid for spay/neuter in the USA, you know how inexpensive this price is!

In this note, we are soliciting volunteers to help at the clinic and funds to pay for the operations.  If you can be here, please call us at 650-325-5135 (US) or 311-258-4105 (San Pancho) and let us know when you can help . . . and if you cannot be here, a donation of any amount would be very much appreciated. You can send checks to Betty McIntyre at 261 Arlington Way, Menlo Park, CA  94025  USA.

We feel this program is very important to the pueblo, to the health and welfare of all the people and animals in San Pancho. Please help support this worthwhile endeavor if you can!

Thanks very much!

Judith Anderson
Betty McIntyre”

Though it does make navigating around the pueblo somewhat of a challenge at times, the cobblestone work on our streets is progressing quite nicely. We will surely “miss” all the ruts and potholes… (NOT). With just a little more patience we will all get through this time of inconvenience we are all experiencing at this point in time.

The 2006 “San Pancho Days” celebration started on Tuesday, September 26th and will continue for nine days through Wednesday, October 4th, 2006! Each day is hosted by a different neighborhood – all trying to outdo one another. LOUD fireworks begin at roughly 5 am every morning - and also at noon. Each evening there will be a parade ending up at the church across from the plaza. Then mass is held.  After mass, the fiesta begins in the plaza with yet more fireworks, food, drink and lots of music and dancing! Watch out for the nightly appearance of the “bull”.  It is a guy wearing a headdress shaped in the form of a bull. Attached to the “bull” are a zillion skyrockets (approximately a zillion anyways). Without warning, the “bull” will appear running out of nowhere with the skyrockets blazing. The “bull” will CHASE you and everyone else trying to shoot young and old alike with his fireworks!!! In a former life, I used to be a Corporate Safety Director… When I first saw the “bull” firing skyrockets at people, it went against all that I thought I knew regarding the “safe & sane” approach to using fireworks… After a few years of seeing the joy, excitement & laughter of the crowd running from the “bull” I have lightened up a little bit about this custom… but I still keep my guard up as the “bull” has been known to show up TWICE in a night (just when you thought you were safe)!! There are still a few more days and nights left to come and join us during the “San Pancho Days” celebration!!!

Until next time,
