Sailing towards the unforgettable… By Jesús de Avila • April 2009
Unforgettable... is the result of experiencing a sailing cruise in the Bay of Banderas.
The forecast stated that the sun would set around 7pm behind some rain heralding clouds. Anyhow, by 5pm we were already boarding the Eleganz ―a beautiful, spacious and well-equipped 38 footer Lagoon catamaran― that would take us through this adventure.
While the ritual of leaving Nuevo Vallarta’s port took place, we took our shoes off and soon enough were so much at ease with the textures, spaces and the whole context of the sailing vessel that, when the boat’s Captain asked us: ”What kind of music would you like to listen to during the cruise?” We told him not to turn on the sound system as this time, the sounds of the wind playing with the sails, as well as the waves caressing the hull, would be the melody we would listen to and enjoy throughout the cruise.
The sails were raised and the intensity of emotions too… now the wind was the king at the center of the stage! While a crewman yelled “whale at twelve!” The captain skillfully steered the vessel into a course that made the best of the existing wind, while keeping our sailing smooth while we practically flew over the sea! What to the crew was a nautical routine and ordinary maneuver was to us an extraordinary happening!
Sailing further from the marina though still in the safety of the bay, we were at times desperate for a spot in the catamaran ―that can accommodate 23 passengers― where we could capture in our camera all of the images and spectacular views before us. The sea, the waves, the clouds in constant motion; the mountains in the horizon; the sun’s rays piercing the clouds and their silver-like reflection on the sea; the sky and ocean hues, majestic gray clouds covering the port while the sun shone in the horizon. Other vessels keeping us company, tight sails resisting the wind, the surf on the beach, a cruise ship departing, several planes taking off, seagulls and pelicans, dolphins leaping and much more! We wanted to shoot pictures of it all! Though they also invited us to sit and quietly enjoy.
The crew treated us to a simple and succulent snack; that was just the right chance to ease down to an ideal moment lying on deck, thank God for this experience, chat a little, watch, smile and simply enjoy.
While we approached the coast with the idea of taking some pictures of the port right after dusk, the menacing clouds coming from the imposing mountains already covered the city and it seemed they would take away our chance to admire the sunset, when all of the sudden, within a wide streak of bright sky in the horizon, the sun began to set in a relaxed mood, creating a warm reflection of distinct orange-reddish hues over the sea and the clouds. Such sunset will never repeat itself; there we were, speechless witnesses of the perfect equilibrium established and ruled from the very beginnings of the world, by God’s wise rules. Few things or events can generate the types of mixed feelings experienced during this stage of sailboat cruising.
The captain steered the bow northbound, signaling the time to return home. The sun had set and some stars made their sparkling apparition in the night sky, while the lights in Puerto Vallarta began to shine making the scenery both nostalgic and fully romantic. From the ocean, the port’s perspective is wide and totally different, allowing us to discover and appreciate some of the details that make Puerto Vallarta be considered one of the most beautiful and picturesque places in Mexico.
With more than one hundred and fifty pictures in our camera’s memory, we decided to stop taking pictures; shielding ourselves from the now headwind we sat on the bow to enjoy the return.
The reason why we decided to sail the bay was to write-off one of our “things to do before we die” activities’ list (Our Bucket List), and although it was an approximately four-hour excursion, it turned out to be “a sailboat towards the unforgettable”.
Sailing the Bay of Banderas is a “must” among those activities for those visiting Puerto Vallarta, as well as one WE should already have experienced; us living in this paradise!
A sailing cruise may be the ideal thing to do to: propose, declare your love, celebrate a birthday or anniversary; get to better know the city; take spectacular pictures, leave the routine, among many more reasons. Email to a friend
We thank Mauricio de La Macorra, Diego Carballo and the very kind crew José Alonso and César at Eleganz.
Some recommendations for sunset sailing:
• If you are not a seasoned sailor, take a seasickness pill at least a half-hour before take-off.
• Wear comfortable and warm clothing.
• Use solar protection
• Do not forget you camera and always wear it around your neck.
• It is preferable to be barefoot on deck
• Drink moderately
• Reserve your cruise beforehand
• Reserve your boat with Vallarta Sailing
