In Puerto Vallarta, the beach, the sun, the jungle with its humidity and wildlife, and its environment, capture the attention of all its visitors, nonetheless, probing into the mountains of the Sierra Madre that protect our port, make a magnificent opportunity to be awesomely struck, by a privileged and peculiar charm that only the greenery of the forest and the reddish earth, can impress on the adventurers who dare to detour from the beach holiday route, to experience what they may have not imagined when they decided to visit this destination.
Following the advise of Federico León de la Vega in his article: Color Theory - Practice I, some months ago I decided to drive into the sierra – without depassing any other car—, with the purpose of visiting the town of Mascota, searching for books or chronicles to enlighten my knowledge about the great and significant history of the region.
I visited on a holiday and unfortunately the town office where I could find the literature I sought was not open. A little frustrated, I decided to walk the downtown streets of such a typical and clean town, a distinctive feature of our rural towns’ ambiance.
Its cathedral, adorned with cut-paper garlands, its main plaza with planters full of a diversity of flowers, its old and well-kept city hall, its arcade, as well as its mansions with red-tile roofs and huge doors and windows – all decorated to celebrate the town’s holiday – amidst a context of great activity and color made by the people who moved about and shared all, it gave me a cheerful welcome that soon dissipated my brief disillusion.
I profited from this opportunity to visit the regional museum named after Professor Raúl González Peña, where the hall dedicated to painter Gilberto Guerra González, definitely stands out, an impressionist painter of beautiful landscapes, who genuinely impresses anyone who sees his works. The collection shown there permanently attracts the attention of expert art connoisseurs from many corners of the world. Just to visit this hall makes it worthwhile to make the exclusive trip to this town known as “the jewel of the Sierra de Mascota” located at 4,000ft above sea level.
I concluded my stroll at the most prestigious ice-cream popsicle place in town, I came back to my car enjoying a delicious chocolate popsicle. Mascota has much to share but I will leave it for another occasion, once I have read a bit more about its history and the lives of its people.
The beautiful and fascinating eco-touristic route Puerto Vallarta – Mascota, goes through the sierra on route 70, which also connects travelers to the roads to Las Palmas and San Sebastián del Oeste, and one of their main attractions is the crossing at the Puente del Progreso (Progress Bridge), considered by many as unique piece of Mexican engineering. In one day the three places can be visited, though to discover all of their enchantment you would need at least two or three days.
Coming back to Federico’s suggestion, driving through the sierra at less tan 40 miles an hour, while listening to classical or instrumental music, you feel the fresh mountain breeze and you can watch the great variety of landscapes, stopping to take pictures of accessible and attractive spots. It is a marvelous experience that every visitor should enjoy, while those of us living here could embrace at least once every two months. Email to a friend
