Boat Show Latin America 2009
By Eduardo Rincón-Gallardo • April 2009

boatLast month Puerto Vallarta was host to the first ever Latin American Boat Show 2009 which took place at the new, enlarged maritime terminal, precisely by the pier where a third cruise ship can dock, as the enlarged facility can now accommodate three cruise ships simultaneously.

The new third dock was equipped with two temporary floating fingers to accommodate the yachts in exhibition; there were around one hundred boats and yachts both in the water and at the exhibit area.

It was a great display of bright colors and sleek lines, powerful and luxurious toys to frolic in on the water. There were streamlined powerboats around twenty-something feet to stylish hundred footers.

Our navy participated with an exhibit including uniforms, charts, accessories, scale models of our navy’s ships and personnel to inform visitors on the various peacetime activities our navy performs assisting victims of natural disasters and accidents.

On the first day of the show we enjoyed the demonstration of one of our navy’s helicopters performing a rescue operation, it was a huge chopper and they retrieved a man from the water with a pulley-operated basket, it was quite an impressing operation I had never seen live!

That night one of the boat makers, Powerboats, sponsored a cocktail under a tent by the dock, the tent and the yachts were illuminated by special lighting that made the whole atmosphere otherworldish, well, the drinks and the hors d’oeuvres were also top quality.

boatThe next day the maker Boston Whaler had three of their staff arrive on one of their boats in front of the exhibit dock, one of them brought out a chainsaw and started to cut the vessel in two! All the while the other two sat calmly, one behind him at the helm and another sitting on the bow. To make a long story short, he made a clean cut from side to side of the boat and the guy on the bow started drifting away, hardly a drop of water on him, while the other two restarted their engine and rode away on the aft section of their half-boat. Quite impressing too.

But there were not only boats, there were restaurants present offering delicious foods and drinks, stands of tourism and boating related enterprises and many, many beautiful girls making those boats look even more desirable.

boatI cannot recall how many different brands of boats and yachts were present but Performance Boats, a distributor for most of them was there and they held another presentation on Sunday at the new Riviera Nayarit Marina at La Cruz de Huanacaxtle.

Personally, I would have loved seeing a wider range of boat styles, including sailboats (there were none) and diesel powered boats (the only ones were like 60 to 100 footers) and more boat accessories; however from March 12 to the 16th Puerto Vallarta was the Latin American capital of boating.
