Huichol Indian Art special, this March
Again this year we will be able to enjoy the colorful sights of Huichol art work. Be it intricate art forms by means of yarn or beads. Their craftsmanship is extraordinary and the prices are outrageously cheap!
They call themselves Wixaritari tatie Kie and they will also be holding celebrations that include the presence of various elements of their communities, as well as costumes, music, on weekends.
The exhibit will last from March 1st to the 15th at Plaza Caracol from 10am to 9pm.
They are a very special group of people that live in harmony with their environment and survived the Spanish conquest mainly due to their pacifist culture which also allowed them to embrace the catholic religion, though as a Huichol told me once, “we have some closer friends, the deer, the snake, the water, our peyote”.
The women sew and embroider gorgeous, colorful dresses for their men, who wear a feathered hat and a “morral” an also embroidered pouch that hangs from their shoulder. They are not only natives of Jalisco and Nayarit, they are also found in the states of Zacatecas and Durango, though they perform a yearly pilgrimage further north to collect the peyote plant that is an integral part of their celebrations that center chiefly on the outcome of their crops.
Vallarta, as a major tourist resort offers tourists quality arts and crafts from all regions of Mexico; but this time we offer you something of our very own! You can also join excursions to Huichol communities that are definitely off the beaten track!Email to a friend
